New 3D project started today

Ok, so, here is what I have decided to tat next. It is something I have wanted to do for a while, but just recently could invision it. He is going to be...
Tada! A 3D tatted fruit bat! Fruit bats are really cute, because they actually look a lot like a dog with wings. Here you see his head, the only part I have finished so far. He is going to a full bodied, and winged, bat. The plan is to get a neat gnarly branch from my dying tree, make a sort of stand out of it, and hang my little bat from it, upside down, of course. I wish they made black polyfill.. I think that would be neat to stuff him with, but at least, you can really see the tatting this way. What do you think?

Too cool! I can't wait to see him finished. Not too sure it would work, but how about lining his bat parts with black tulle and then adding the fiberfill?

Ooooh, I love ALL bats and have had one or two 'close encounters' with them too. They're so pretty. LOVE yours too. What a splendid face.

I had better not let my G grandson see this. He has a book called Stellaluna that he has me read to him when ever he spends the night, it is about a fruitbat. Cannot wait to see it when it is finished.

The only bats I like are yours! Well...I think they are beneficial to the environment but don't want them in my house.

I wonder if you could dye the batting/fiberfill first? Try just a small ball, drop some black ink or watercolor on it and see what happens. I'm thinking it will spread out. You might have to put it in a net bag or old hosiery knotted and put in the dryer to fluff up. Maybe you could ask Martha Stewart? Really - I think there's a question segment on her website - haven't checked but surely there is!

Thanks so much everyone. I was hoping people wouldn't think it odd! Well, I am battatter anyway!
Thanks for noticing the nose, I hoped it would show up enough to look like a nose to others.
Stellaluna? Cool name. I think, since I can't steal that, I will call her Bellaluna Bat!
I will try dying some polyfill.. can't hurt to try. I couldn't find anything about it on Martha's site. Go figure!

I know this sounds weird ~ consider the source ~ but the lint in the dryer is often dark grey...Might work as a stuffing....my first thought was to try dying some of it; suggested above. OR how bout old black nylons? hummm xxx bj

Soooo cute! I love bats - and especially yours!
Perhaps you could dye kapok to have a darker filling. I don't know if that's possible but it's worth a try I think.

Love your fruit bat! I was thinking the same thing Ridgetatter was, about using black hose around the filling. But I'm not sure just how much of your tatting would show up that way, but I understand having it black would be more, uhh, realistic? Can't wait to see Bellaluna finished!
